Smart locks for humid doors and frequent travelers

Falcon Locksmith Pros installs keypad and app-connected deadbolts across Kenner and both banks of the river, picks hardware that copes with damp air, and sets it up so you can look after the front door from a departure gate. The estimate is free.

Why people who travel like them

When you fly out of the airport down the road, the house key is one more thing to keep track of, and the spare under a planter is the first place anyone looks. A smart deadbolt replaces both. The door answers to a code or to your phone, and on a connected model you can check from the terminal that it actually locked behind you.

While you are away, a neighbor who waters the plants or a sitter who feeds the cat gets a code that is theirs alone. When you land, you delete it with a tap, and nobody has a copy of anything to hand back.

Humidity, heat and the electronics inside

Damp air is hard on any keypad, and a long, sticky summer finds every weak seal. Locks built with sealed keypads and finishes meant for the outdoors last noticeably longer here than the bargain models sold for drier places, so the choice of lock matters as much as the install.

The door matters too. When a frame swells in August, a bolt that slid freely in March starts dragging on its strike. A manual deadbolt just feels stiff; a motorized one strains, stalls and burns through batteries. Part of every install is setting the strike so the bolt still clears it when the wood has taken on all the moisture it is going to.

Raised houses and more than one way in

A raised house near the river can have a front door at the top of the steps, a back door onto a deck, and a door into the storage room underneath. Not every one of them needs electronics. Most owners put the smart deadbolt on the door they use every day and leave the rest on keys. The door that faces the weather head-on also gets a second look, because a frame that soaks up rain season after season is the one most likely to bind against a motorized bolt.

Those other locks can be keyed to match the backup cylinder on the new deadbolt, so a single key still opens every door that takes one. That keeps the key ring short without putting a keypad where it would rarely be touched.

Storms, evacuations and the power going out

Smart deadbolts run on batteries, so an outage does not lock you out or leave the door open. The keypad keeps taking codes even when the router is dark; only the remote features wait for the internet to come back.

Storm season does add one chore. When a household leaves for a few days, codes tend to end up with neighbors, family and repair crews. Afterwards, every code that is no longer needed should come out of the lock, and an app that lists who has one makes that a two-minute job. Putting fresh batteries in before the season starts is the other habit worth keeping.

What the install covers

The technician measures the door thickness, the size of the existing holes and how far the lock sits from the edge, because those numbers decide whether a new deadbolt drops straight in. Most doors here take one in the holes already there; an older door with a worn or oversized bore may need a little work first, and you hear that before anything is drilled.

Once the lock is mounted, the bolt is lined up with the strike, the master code is changed from the factory setting, your codes are entered with you standing there, and the app is paired to your phone. You keep the backup key, and the technician shows you how the lock signals a low battery so the warning never comes as a surprise.

From the call to the first code

Most installs take a single visit.

  1. Tell us about the door

Which door, what lock is on it now, and whether you want a keypad, an app or both.

  2. The door and frame are checked

Swelling, the strike, the hole sizes and anything that would make a motor work too hard.

  3. The lock goes in

Mounted, lined up, and run through its full throw until it locks cleanly every time.

  4. Codes, app and backup key

Codes entered with you, the app paired, and the backup key handed over.

Renters and landlords

Tenants need the landlord's okay before a lock changes, and most landlords ask for a code of their own. Landlords with several units often prefer keypads for exactly that reason: between leases, a code comes out of the lock and a new one goes in, and nobody has to collect a key or schedule a rekey.

For a rental that sits empty between tenants, an app-connected lock also lets the owner open the door for a painter or an inspector without driving over, and the history shows exactly when each visitor came and went. When the new tenant moves in, their code goes in on the first day and every earlier code comes out.

Before you go keyless

Will a keypad hold up in our humidity?

A well-sealed lock with an outdoor finish does. Models designed for dry climates tend to give out early here, which is why the hardware gets chosen with the weather in mind. The finish on the outside matters as much as the keypad, since pitted hardware is the first sign that moisture is getting in.

What happens during a power outage?

Nothing changes at the door. The lock runs on its own batteries, so codes and the backup key keep working. Remote features return when the internet does.

Can I let a neighbor in while I'm away?

Yes. Give them a code of their own and delete it when you get home. Many app models can limit a code to certain days or hours.

Our door sticks every summer. Can it still take a smart lock?

Yes, once the strike is set so the bolt clears it on the dampest day. A smart lock on a door that binds will drain its batteries quickly, so that adjustment is part of the install.

Does a smart lock still take a key?

Most do, through a backup cylinder, and some add contacts for an outside battery. Either way there is a way in that does not depend on electronics.

Can a smart lock go on the door under the house?

It can, though most people keep that one on a key. A storage door that rarely opens gains little from a keypad, and keying it to match the backup cylinder on the new deadbolt keeps one key for the whole house.

After an evacuation, can every code be changed at once?

Codes are removed one at a time, but on an app-connected lock you can see the whole list and clear it in a few minutes. We can do it with you if you prefer.

Is the estimate free?

Yes. You hear what the door needs and what the lock involves, and the estimate is free before anything starts.
